Our Approach

Preventing Crashes is designed to help health care professionals develop and maintain competence in responding to life-threatening events.

Currently available courses such as ACLS are excellent at building competence. However, if not used routinely, people lose their ability to successfully recall key knowledge or complete complex skills. While the rate of loss differs based on experience and other factors, competence is often lost six months after training (Patel, Posencheng, and Ades, 2012). Ongoing practice is critical, and Preventing Crashes is designed to support regular team training.

Learning Model

Hybrid simulation, with IV arm, and mannikin for CPR when needed

Learning normally occurs in small groups of up to eight learners, and led by 1-2 facilitators, in order to promote participatory learning. Sessions may be brief, lasting 5-15 minutes to run through a case or simulation – or may include a combination of cases and simulations. Many organizations find a two hour session is ideal to build learning, maintain focus, and support scheduling.

Preventing Crashes uses a mastery learning model to ensure that learners demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skill, and attitudes. Mastery learning sets a high standard, and uses appropriate assessment to ensure all learners meet this standard. Our learning model specifically includes:

  • case-based learning
  • hybrid simulations
  • the flipped classroom
  • testing to learn

Services

The Preventing Crashes mission is to help health care organizations and their staff prepare for emergencies through training. We do so by building internal training capacity for interprofessional teams within organizations, supporting ongoing effective, low-cost, and rewarding education for staff and learners.

For organizations or individuals who are comfortable offering sessions independently, we offer a large, growing library of free, Open-Access learning resources. These resources may be used ‘off the shelf’, or customized for specific organizational needs.

For organizations who are interested in further support, we can also provide the following core services:
